Tests conducted with the prototypes of Arado Ar 234 airplanes showed that straight wings maintained good aerodynamic characteristics up to speeds not exceeding 800 km / h. Flights at speeds close to the sound barrier required designers to adopt an innovative approach to the shape and contour of the wings. As early as December 9, 1942, Arado Rüdiger Kosin and Walter Lehmann's engineers patented a wing with a variable slant along the leading edge with a decreasing ratio of thickness to chord profile as it approached the wing tip. In mid-1944, engineer Kosin decided to use the wings of his design on the Arado 234. Five different variants of the airfoil, designated Versuchsflügel I to V, were developed, which differed in slant. However, none of these solutions have been installed in practice. The most advanced work on the installation of the new type of wings was carried out at Dedelsdorf airport, where the Ar 234 V16 aircraft was rebuilt. However, the plane was destroyed in mid-April 1945 by British troops entering the airport.
