The North American P-51 Mustang powered by the British-made Rolls-Royce Merlin / Packard engine was indisputably the best long-range escort fighter of the Second World War. Its entry into service in November 1943 significantly limited the losses suffered by the heavy bombers of the American Eighth Air Fleet, which at that time was conducting a strategic bombing offensive against the Third Reich. In the European theater of operations, Americans successfully used Mustangs for reconnaissance and attacks on ground targets. It was the Mustang that took the Luftwaffe control of the skies of Europe.
